Dead Good Books Reading List — 16 Books Guaranteed to Scare

In October 2019, I received an email from Dead Good Books. This email contained a link to a list of 16 books guaranteed to scare. (2025 Update: This book list has since been updated)
Horror is my favourite genre to read and write. And as a writer, it’s important to read as many books in your genre to learn how best to write in that genre. So I was keen to see what books they mentioned on the list.
While looking through the list, I realised there were many books listed that I hadn’t yet read. So, I decided to create a new reading list for 2020.
There are three books that I wasn’t able to find in the library, so I have had to remove them from the list. However, if I do manage to find a copy of the book Psycho by Robert Bloch, I would happily buy it. Also, there are three books that I’ve already read, so I have also removed them from the list.
This leaves me with the following books to read:
- The Fog by James Herbert
- The Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris
- The Quick by Lauren Owen
- The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty
- Ghost Stories by E F Benson
- The House on Cold Hill by Peter James
- Bird Box by Josh Malerman
- The Whisper Man by Alex North
- The Taking of Annie Thorne by C J Tudor
- The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware
- The Shape of Night by Tess Gerritsen
Have you read any of these books? Or do you plan to read this reading list? Either way, please feel free to comment in the box below.
